Bridport Runners kicked off 2014 with introducing the “B series”: The running club will participate in a number of running events over the year which all start with the letter “B” – taking them all the way from Bridport to Berlin. The first one in this (not being an official racing) series, the Blackmore Vale Half Marathon, already saw eight members of the club last Sunday conquering the 13.2 mile long distance, all in times under two hours. First Bridport Runner to finish was Ben Renshaw in 1 hour and 18 minutes. See full results on the Blackmore Vale Lions’ special website. More races to come in the B series will include … the Bath Half Marathon on 2nd of March, the Brighton Marathon on 6th of April and the Bournemouth Marathon on 4th of October. Highlight of the year, however, will be the Berlin Marathon on the 28th of September: Six Bridport Runners received tickets to this event which is supposed to be one of the best and fastest marathon races in the world. And Vicky Ackerman of Bridport Runners will be on a fund raising mission in Berlin, collecting money for the Charity “Get Kids Going”. The charity supports disabled children up to the age of 26 to access sport by providing equipment and support; Vicky has set up a donation website with more information. Apart from participating in these prestigious races, Bridport Runners will again organise their own local “B” races: They will host for the second time, together with the Bridport Leisure Centre and the Brit Valley Rotary Club, the Bridport Jurassic Coast Run which will include a 10 kilometres, a 5 kilometres, a 1 mile and a family Fun Run. The event will take place on Sunday, 13th of July, at the Bridport Leisure Centre.
Also starting with the letter B: For everyone who is considering becoming a runner or getting fitter in general, Bridport Runners will start their new Beginners Class on Wednesday, 12th of March, at 6 pm at the car park of Bridport Leisure Centre. Finally, “The Bridport Mile” or Sports Relief Mile, a one mile long run at St. Mary’s School in Bridport, will take place on Sunday, 23rd of March, 11:40 am to which both St Mary’s School and Bridport Runners invite everyone. Leaflets with more information about the Beginners Class and Bridport Mile are available at the Leisure Centre as from Wednesday, 5th of March.
Commenting on the variety and challenge of the different races in the B series, Bridport Runners Chair Brian Shelley is confident: “I hope that many people will come to our local running events and enjoy them. As an old Leonard Cohen fan, I think our motto for this year should be: ‘First we take Bridport – then we take Berlin.’”
