Hot race, tough climb but much fun at first Bridport Jurassic Coast Run

Despite boiling temperatures and a killing tough climb up Thorncombe Beacon, the first Bridport Jurassic Coast Run this Sunday turned out to be a great success for participants and joint organisers ─ the Bridport Leisure Centre, Brit Valley Rotary Club and Bridport Runners. More than 130 runners signed up for the 10k and the 5k races, with the furthest coming all the way from London. The quickest runner on the 10k course was Bridport Runners’ Ben Renshaw (well done, Ben!) in 49 minutes 21 seconds. Here are the results of the …10k race and the 5k race. See more pictures of the event in our event gallery. Thanks to everyone who participated and made this event such a great success!

The fastest woman on the track was Li von Schack (1 hour 33 seconds), closely followed by Bridport Runners’ Kazy Vincent-Janes. First in the finish line among the 5k runners was Harrison Yarnold (26 minutes 16), fastest female runner was Gemma Snow (36 minutes 20 seconds).

The challenging course led participants from the Bridport Leisure Centre through the Highlands End Caravan Park, where the 5k and 10k runners split. While the 5k racers were making their way back along the Jurassic Coast and West Bay, the 10k group still had to climb Thorncombe Beacon, the second highest hill on the South Coast. From there they went over fields, stiles and a narrow path through the wood to Down House Farm, back to Eype and, joining the 5k route, over to West Bay and the finish line. Back at the Bridport Centre, all visitors could enjoy a session in the swimming pool, bouncy castle, taster sessions and free use of the Centre’s facilities as well as food and refreshments supplied by the Red Brick Café. Later on, more than 50 children, dads, mums and grandparents took part in a Fun Trail in the fields of the Bridport Leisure Centre.

Bridport Runners would like to thank everyone who made this extraordinary event happen (hoping we haven’t forgotten anyone): everyone involved at Bridport Leisure Centre, especially Rachel and Luke; the nice ladies and gentlemen from Brit Valley Rotary Club, all perfectly organised by John (Dobinson) and Jon (Winkle); our sponsors: West Dorset Leisure Holidays (Highlands End), Richard Batten Jewellers, Gary Pitcher Locksmith and A.G. Down Funeral Directors; DJ Jay Stevenson from Freak Scene for musical entertainment on the day; West Bay Harbour Masters for providing the barriers; the guys from West Bay Coast Guards securing the event up at Thorncombe Beacon; Sarah Horton for helping out at the registration and a very big “Thank you!” to all the partners, children and families of Bridport Runners who volunteered before and on the day in numerous jobs from marshalling to registration and time keeping.
