Bridport Runners are notoriously famous for doing strange things – like running happily through mud, getting lost on their home turf and participating in peculiar races, near and far. The last couple of weeks have seen some Bridport Runners starting at the Edinburgh Marathon, the Ramathon Half, but most absurd in the Man vs Horse in Wales. Which was exactly as it says and was loads of fun!
Edinburgh: Quick race, but long way back
Joy and Tom represented Bridport Runners in the Edinburgh Marathon end of May and did both fantastic. Tom, for whom it was the first marathon, needed … 03:18:08 hrs. to manage the course and came in as number 463. Joy, who had only done London a couple of weeks before, finished in 4:04:59. More than 30,000 runners had signed in for the two days festival in the Scottish capital which consisted of a Marathon, a Half, a 10k, a 5k and junior races. Even harder than the race, however, must have been the way back: Joy and Tom missed their plane leaving Edinburgh and had to sleep a night on a bench at Costas coffee in the airport.
Derby Half: Father and son are running together
The Ramathon or Derby Half Marathon begining of June was a very special race for Brian who did it together with his son Dan: “The good things about the race were that I was close to the Stadium of my beloved Derby; I was running with Dan; the rest of his family did the fun run and the course passed places we took Dan as a little boy”, remembers Brian. It was also a lovely flat course going through a lovely country park and returning to the stadium along a 3 mile cycle path alongside the River for which father and son needed 2:13:41.
Man vs Horse: One of the 10 strangest marathons in the world
Probably the most ludicrous race was the Man vs Horse mid of June, taking place every year mid of June for more than 35 years in Llanwrtyd Wells in Wales, the smallest town in Britain. Ben (Renshaw), who had done it two years ago, more or less encouraged a crowd of Bridport Runners to try this crazy race which was born in 1980 out of a competition between a huntsman and a rider around the question who would be faster on a longer course – man or horse? No wonder that The Telegraph places it at No. 1 of “The 10 strangest marathons on the planet“!
More than 700 runners started in this years’ event, only to be chased by 55 riders and horses 15 minutes later. The Man vs Horse which seems to be the event in Llanwrtyd Wells was even the topic of a Radio feature, broadcasted in the USA by public radio NPR which you can listen to here: “The Neighs Have It: Horse Outruns Man, But Just Barely“.
While Ben, Tom and Kazy did the whole 20 miles of this beautiful cross Country race, Kazy also started with Ben Loudon in Relay team “Bridport 1” and Hagen, Brian and Claire formed the team of “Bridport 2”. See their Results of Man vs Horse 2015 here. However, competition was not the aim of this incredibly funny and challenging event as the following picture gallery surely will show…
