Tougher than the Beacon: Coastal Trail Half and 10K at Lulworth

„There isn’t anything steeper than the Beacon, is there?“ If only Clive had been right with his assumption … Unfortunately for the nine Bridport Runners taking on last Sunday’s Coastal Trail Series event at West-Lulworth, they had to find out the hard way that Thorncombe Beacon isn’t the biggest challenge on the Southern Coast. However, despite the sheer endless amount of steep hills along the Jurassic Coast Path that no one managed to run up (not even Kazy or Ben!) and the amount of other crazy runners taking part in allegedly one of Britain’s toughest courses, Bridport Runners did quite well. In the half-marathon ─ which was 16.3 miles long ─, out of 380 competitors, Ben … … managed to come in 5th in 2 hours and 21 minutes, just a bit more than six minutes after the winner. Next Bridport Runners to finish were Tom (3 hours 1 minute), with Clive on his heels (3:02 hours). Kazy (3:14, which made her the fastest woman in her age group), Gemma (3:36) and Hagen (3:39) followed. In the 10k, Claire finished the race in 1 hour and 11 minutes*, Vicky needed just a minute more, and Brian did the 10k distance in 1 hour 15 minutes.

It was not only endurance but pure strength that was required on the day as an interesting calculation showed which Ben worked out: All Bridport Runners who had been to the Berlin Marathon finished the Lulworth half-marathon roughly 25 minutes earlier than the Berlin event.

The most important question, however, is: Where was Jim?!
